GO GORAKHPUR: Having served almost 20 years behind bars for his involvement in the Madhumita Shukla murder case, Amarmani has been released, reigniting speculations about his return to political activity. While he may not be able to play an active role in politics, his presence is expected to trigger new political dynamics in Purvanchal. What significance did Amarmani Tripathi hold in Purvanchal’s political sphere previously, and what impact will his return have now?

Some media reports suggest that BJP might field him in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections to retain Brahmin support for the party. However, close observers of Purvanchal politics believe it’s premature to make such assertions.

Madhumita Shukla was murdered in 2003

Madhumita Shukla was murdered in 2003. She was an emerging poetess from Uttar Pradesh, well-known for her recitation of Veer Ras poems. Achieving rapid popularity in a short span, tragedy struck on May 9, 2003, when she was fatally shot in her residence at Paper Mill Colony, Lucknow. During this period, Uttar Pradesh was under the governance of Bahujan Samaj Party with Chief Minister Mayawati, and Amarmani Tripathi held a prominent position in the government. As the investigation unfolded, it led to Amarmani’s doorstep.
Madhumita Shukla was pregnant during the incident. Amarmani Tripathi was arrested in September 2003 for his involvement in her murder. The case transitioned from CID to CBI for investigation. In October 2007, Amarmani and his wife Madhumani were sentenced to life imprisonment for Madhumita’s murder by a Dehradun court. The Nainital High Court and the Supreme Court upheld the couple’s conviction.

All the state parties have consistently supported Amarmani

Amarmani Tripathi has garnered the backing of all political parties in the state. He seized the opportunity to become an MLA twice under the Congress banner. In the 1989 elections, he contested from the Laxmipur (now Nautanwa) assembly constituency of Maharajganj district and emerged victorious for the first time. He secured victory in 1991 and 1996 also on the Congress ticket. BJP also embraced him into the party and appointed him as a minister. He was later dismissed by the BJP government due to a kidnapping case.
During the Madhumita Shukla murder case in 2003, he held a ministerial post in the Mayawati government. Amarmani’s political prominence was sustained during the SP and BSP regimes as well. This is why he was a minister in the BJP government led by Kalyan Singh, Ram Prakash Gupta, and Rajnath Singh. He remained affiliated with the SP during the governance of Mulayam Singh Yadav and then transitioned to the BSP.

BJP made preparations before playing Congress’s Brahmin card! : According to certain media reports, if Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh, the political climate could significantly favor the Congress. Consequently, it is speculated that the BJP might experience a reduction in its Brahmin voter base. Historical trends suggest that Brahmins have traditionally aligned with the Congress. On the other hand, the BJP has been actively striving to position itself as a party representing backward communities. This effort implies a considerable allocation of tickets to OBC candidates. As a result, it is feasible that the BJP’s share of votes could be diminished if the Congress fields a Brahmin candidate.

Nonetheless, experts in Purvanchal politics remain skeptical about Congress gaining substantial advantages in UP politics solely through Brahmin representation. The Brahmin community already commands considerable respect within the BJP. Hence, interpreting the political implications of Amarmani Tripathi’s release requires more time and context.
