GO GORAKHPUR:The medical team at AIIMS Gorakhpur has achieved a significant success. On Friday, for the first time, a female patient underwent a ‘thoracotomy’ procedure, in which the surgical team removed a sarcoma tumor extending from the 7th rib on the right side to the chest wall.
A 25-year-old female patient, Sarita Devi, from Maharajganj had been complaining of swelling in the right side of her chest for the past 4-5 months. She had undergone an examination at AIIMS Gorakhpur, where the doctors in the surgical OPD identified through chest X-rays and CT scans that the “swelling” was a tumor. It was found to be extending from the 7th rib on the right side to the chest wall.
The medical team planned to remove the tumor and provide relief to the patient by performing thoracotomy. With this objective, she was admitted to the hospital. On Friday, during the surgical procedure, the 7th rib was cut and the tumor was successfully removed through thoracotomy. This unique procedure was carried out by Dr. Gaurav Gupta, Head of the Department of Surgery, Dr. Ravi Gupta (Associate Professor), Dr. Mukul Singh (Assistant Professor), Dr. Prakash Vishwas, and Dr. Jitendra Yadav (Senior Residents) working together. They successfully removed the tumor.
The team of Professor and Chief Anesthetist Dr. Vardhan, Dr. Ankita Kabi (Associate Professor), and Dr. Vijeta Bajpai (Assistant Professor) provided anesthesia to the patient. Nursing officers Sister Susan Messi, Indu, and Pargat Singh assisted in the case in the operation theater.
As per the statement released by AIIMS Gorakhpur, the patient Sarita is currently kept in the Surgical ICU. Her condition is stable, and an intercostal chest tube has been inserted to monitor any fluid collection or bleeding, as is done in such surgeries. It will be removed after a few days when the lungs start functioning normally.
According to sources from AIIMS, the patient was referred to a cardiothoracic surgeon, but she did not want to go elsewhere. It should be noted that such cancer surgeries are usually performed in well-equipped centers with CVTS or oncosurgical facilities. This difficult task was accomplished by AIIMS Gorakhpur. The Director of AIIMS congratulated the entire team for the successful thoracic surgery.
