GO GORAKHPUR: The city’s largest church, St. John’s Church Basharatpur, will be celebrating its 200th anniversary on June 24. The church’s foundation day will be marked with grand celebrations, and the preparations have already begun since Thursday. The church is adorned with vibrant lights, creating a festive atmosphere. A series of events will be organized during the two-day festival on June 23 and 24.
Rev. Roshan Lal, the priest of the church, shared that distinguished speaker Dr. Paul Dhinakaran, his family, and the team of Jesus Call will deliver discourses during the festival. Additionally, various religious programs will be conducted.
500 kg bell in the church: Akash, associated with the church, mentioned that a 500 kg bell was installed in the church nine years ago to enhance its grandeur. The bell serves the purpose of inviting devotees for prayers and disseminating important information. Its resonating sound can be heard up to three kilometers away.
Built by Michael Wilkinson of the Association in 1823: Rev. Roshan Lal, the priest of St. John’s Church, revealed that the church was constructed by Michael Wilkinson of the Missionary Association in 1823. The then collector, Robert Martinus Bird, provided financial assistance for its construction. Recognizing the social work carried out by the Missionary Association, Governor General Lord William Bentinck allocated 1500 acres of land in 1831, with the condition that it should be cultivated to make it fertile.
The Missionary Association, together with the local community, cleared approximately 600 acres of the forested area within the allotted 1500 acres, transforming it into arable land. The society built huts around the pond located in this area and started residing there. Presently, the entire region is known as Basharatpur.
